They cannot be consistently cleaned with a damp cloth without undergoing damage. They cannot withstand the slight moisture of typical cleaning products. Moisture can have an almost immediate negative on wood blinds in some cases.

There are advantages to both real wood and faux wood window blinds. Regular maintenance and cleaning increases the function of both. The main differences are the price, the design possibilities and the ability to deal with moisture. Which product is better just depends upon the specific situation.

How To Install Interior Window Shutters With Outside Mounts

Probably one of the least used type would be window shutters for the inside of the house. Most people think of the outside of the house when it comes to shutters.

There is no reason that you can not use window shutters to add privacy. Not only do they provide great privacy but they also add a unique elegance to the room as well. Depending upon what style you get, they can add a lot more to your window treatment than other types, especially blinds.

If you come to the decision that you might like to try to add shutters to the inside of your windows, below you will find easy steps that will make your job of installing your shutters a lot easier.

There are a variety of different types of things that you will need in order for you to complete this project. You will need the shutters of course, the hardware that comes with your shutters, a saw, screwdriver, paint or stain, polyurethane, paint brush, tape measure. Depending upon what kind of shutters you get will determine the materials that you will need to be able to complete the project. The ones mentioned here are the most commonly required items.

Before you begin you need to decide whether or not you want the window shutters to be installed on the inside of the window or if you would rather have them as outside mounts. Since the window frames are rarely perfectly square, probably the easier route would be to use an outside mount.

We will go with the outside mount here for easier installation, this will take less time and gives you more flexibility with regards to how you hang the shutters. With outside mounts you can hang shutters vertically or horizontally.

The first thing that you will do is mount your hanging strips along each side of the frame of the window. Now you will take the shutter panels and hinge them together with face mount hinges that are supplied by the company that made the shutters. Make sure you have a spacer between each of the shutter panels so that you will be able to close the shutters easily.

Now you will take the hinges and connect them to the shutters, make sure to follow the shutters manufacturers instructions on how to place the hinges on the shutters. You will now want to make sure to mark holes on the hanging strips so that you will know where to connect the hinges at. Once you have done that, you can go ahead and drill holes for the screws for the hinges.

The final installation step is to actually attach the shutters to the hanging strips.

Final note: If you decide to buy unfinished shutters, it is advisable that you paint or stain them before you install them. And if you have louvered shutters it will be a lot less time consuming and easier to use spray paint for these types of shutters.

How To Repair Your Vertical Blinds

Using vertical blinds is a great way to decorate your house. They will make your home look cozy and modernized. They are often used with sliding doors and windows. Another main purpose of the window blinds is to let you adjust light amount allowed into a room. Typical window blinds are made up of three components:

The header is part that is installed horizontally from the top frame of the window.

The slats hang vertically off the header. These slats are made of the following material: fabric, plastic, and wood. When properly adjusted, the slats will open or close to allow the amount of light into the room.

The slats are attached to the header with many clips.

After having used the blinds for some time, they tend to be broken in the areas you use most often. It will save you lots of money if you know how to fix these damages.

First thing first, you have to examine to see which section of the window blinds is damaged. When you use plastic blinds, this section is usually the point the slats and the clip meet. Sometimes, the clip itself is broken.

Fabric slats tend to break where they are attached to the clip. And in some cases the small piece of plastic or wood located at the bottom of the slat can come apart.

Sometimes, the problem lies in the header itself. If the head tail is damaged, the slat will no longer function properly. After you have figured out what the problem is, you can begin fixing it.

In case the vane is broken, you will have to replace it. The process is very quick and easy. You just have to go out and buy a replacement and install on clip. This can entirely be done by hand; no special equipment is needed. However, if the clip needs to be tightened, you can use a screwdriver to apply pressure to it. When you do so, remember to be gentle so as not to damage it.

If you are using a fabric vane, there may be torn portions after long time use. In this case, a needle and thread is enough to fix it. If the part near the conjunction between the vane and the clip is torn, the vane will drop. To amend this, you can use a small portion near the rear of the slat and glue it onto the torn part.

Replacing the clips is also very simple. For most cases, you have to change the entire clip; however if only a portion of it is damaged, then you just have to replace that part. For the first step, you need to remove the old clip. This can be done very quickly. Now you just have to insert a new clip and ensure that when the slat is attached, it is all facing the same direction as the other slats.

If there header is broken, the problem will not very easily resolved. You must first check to see whether the vertical blinds are still under warranty before doing any repair work. The only component of the header that can be repaired at home is the chain. You have to change the worn chain with a new one to repair it. If other components such as the holder or the veins of the header are damaged, you should hire a professional to do the job.
