No one really likes to clean, especially windows with vertical blinds. They seem to be the most neglected when it comes to regular cleaning. But, like most cleaning jobs, if done on a regular basis, it is much easier. If you have left your blinds for a while, do not fear: we will look at the easiest ways to get those blinds clean.

Before getting started, move any furniture away from the window. Soapy water or liquid sprays can be messy, and you may accidentally spill some on the furniture. Be careful, move the furniture so you do not have two messes to clean.

Whether the window blinds are made of wood, vinyl, or fabric, they can be cleaned very easily. You can use a soft brush attachment from the vacuum, soft cloth, or a duster to remove the dust. Following their direction, clean vertically to get the most dirt. If you wear old gloves or socks on your hands, you will get more dirt off.

The kind of blind does not matter, always be gentle. Wood and vinyl blinds are fairly sturdy. Be careful to not accidentally dent or bend them. Fabric blinds may be perforated so ensure you make no unwanted holes.

Make sure to clean blinds in both the open and closed positions. Try not to forget this step. You would not want to have company over only to realize that you only cleaned half them.

If your blinds have been neglected, there will be more than a small amount of dust. You will need to work a lot more to get them clean. Depending on the material, there are many ways to do this.

If you are cleaning vinyl blinds, you can use either a damp sponge or cloth with soapy water or an all-purpose cleaner. You may have to remove the window blinds from their track to scrub them or to use the hose outside. If heavily crusted with dirt, you could soak them in the bathtub in warm soapy water. Make sure you put towels along the inside of the tub to avoid the window blinds scratching the surface. After they have soaked, you should be able to easily remove the dirt, and hang them back up in the window to dry.

Fabric blinds can be vacuumed with the brush attachments. If this does not remove the dust, use some warm water with a damp cloth. It may be possible to remove the fabric part of the window blinds to be washed in the washing machine. Make sure you check whether the material is able to be washed in the washing machine and can be removed safely.

If you have wood blinds, use a soft cloth and an all purpose wood cleaner. This should work for finished and unfinished woods alike. As mentioned before, using an old pair of gloves with the wood cleaner can be a very successful method for wood blinds. Never use water. This might cause the window blinds to warp or crack.

After you have cleaned your blinds, go over the slats with a fabric softener sheet. This will help to keep the dust off for longer. Just remember, if you regularly clean your vertical blinds, it will always be easy.
