Styling Large Windows In Your Home

Having a large window is definitely a positive feature for any homes nowadays. It allows you some leeway when it comes to window treatment designs and gives you the opportunity to be creative when updating its look. With large windows, natural light enters and sometimes casts shadows on your furniture, therefore, further accenting spaces and decor in the room. As windows are your gateway to the outside world, large windows give you the benefit of seeing the beautiful sites outside without having to endure the heat caused by the sun. Likewise, you get to enjoy a breezy living room as you may opt to open a few windows just to let in some air.

If privacy will be your concern about having big windows, choosing the correct window treatment will automatically solve your problem.

Using fabric as your main window treatment, you have the choice whether to use drapes, sheers, or curtains for your large window treatments. If the room is prone to high humidity levels, it is advisable to use lighter fabrics than the heavier ones. This is ideal in bathrooms and kitchens where it tends to be humid during warm weathers. To treat privacy concerns, choose heavier material as this will ensure you keep your privacy intact. Likewise, using heavier curtain materials in bedrooms allow you to take advantage of the room darkening features of your curtains. However, if your window is exposed too much on sunlight everyday, the fabric will tend to fade and lose its beautiful texture.

If you have the option to use blinds as your window treatment, go for bamboo or paper-based blinds. These are environment-friendly and at the same time, provide an easy, intimate look to your decor. Panel tracks are good options to update your windows’ look.

For superior insulation from high temperature situations, shades are your best bets to ward off heat, control natural light that creeps in, and maintain your privacy. With the different designs and patterns to choose from, you can update the look of your room without the necessary budget issues that normally accompany every room renovation.

Toile fabric was first commercially produced in France in 1760. The word “toile” means “cloth” in French. The fabric was created in a region called Jouy-en-Josas. It was originally referred to as Toile de Jouy for that reason. The first toile prints were usually white or cream. The Color Of Your Curtains – What Does It Mean?

Colors are not just pretty attributes of the objects surrounding us. From ancient times, colors have been considered true symbols with deep, primordial meanings. That’s why, when selecting the color palette for the ‘clothes’ of your home – the curtains – you have to choose wisely.

Curtains are one of the most important elements of your home decor. Their color has to meet several criteria: it has to match the rest of your interior design, it has to express your personality and, of course, it has to send a message that truly represents you and your home!

Here are a few suggestions to consider when analyzing how the color of your new curtains will affect the ambiance of your home:

Warm colors are a constant source of energy. Red, brown, gold, dark purple or orange curtains will cast an attractive glow over the entire room.

Cold colors like green, blue or silver will visually ‘cool’ a hot room. The main percentage of heat, especially during summer, comes from the windows. By selecting curtains in cold tones, you’re considerably ‘freshening’ the ambiance of your room!

Curtains in neutral colors are probably the most popular. White, beige, cream, ivory and other pastel tones create a soft, calm atmosphere, at the same time emphasizing other elements of your decoration: the furniture, the paintings on the walls or maybe an unusual door.

Vibrant tones usually make a dominant, expressive statement. Curtains in bright colors can be both tasteless and stylish – depending on your art of combining them with other elements of decoration. Dazzling curtains will look fantastic only if the remaining decor is kept in soft, light colors – otherwise your home risks looking like a circus!

When selecting the color of your curtains, don’t forget about its symbolic meanings. These traditional interpretations can help you harmonize on a deeper level the decor of your home with your character and beliefs. White is usually considered the color or purity and light; black is its counterweight – symbolizing darkness and being a signature of the underground movements; blue, being the color of the sky, represents open space and the celestial world; green, on the other hand, is the color of earth, nature and finite life.

Selecting the most appropriate color is not the only way of creating an original curtain design. Let’s not forget that there are also many types of curtains to choose from! Besides the classical heavy and sheer drapes, I strongly recommend one of the latest innovations in the world of home accessories: string curtains.

Thanks to their softness, exotic look, space-enhancing effect and incredible versatility, string curtains can make your home truly unique! The separate strings will protect you from harsh sunrays and offer you privacy, creating simultaneously a charming diffuse glow in your room. For amplifying this ‘filtering’ effect, choose string curtains in light colors and add some well-deserved magic to your home!

Ideas To Help Select Home Blinds That Are Perfect For You

Home blinds can be necessary for many reasons. They can serve a practical purpose or be purely for decoration. There are many different styles and designs to choose from nowadays, so finding a blind that will match your interior design will be very easy. It is imperative to get the right fit though, as this is very important aspect of a blind, that it fits the window correctly.

You will first need to decide whether the blind will sit inside or outside the window recess. Once that decision is made, you can then go on to measure the width you require for your blind and then the length of the blind you will need. Once you have your measurements in hand, you can then go on to decide the type and design for your blind.

There are many different designs available, such as roman, roller, vertical and venetian. Some are made of very lightweight fabrics, such as voile, others are made out of sturdier and dense fabrics meaning they shut out the sunlight better. Something else to consider when choosing the type of blind you want, is whether or not the fittings are suitable for your window.

There is also a safety issue with some blinds. Some come with very long cords attached and you will need to consider if any young children will have access to the blind cords, and if so, then consider purchasing a blind with a safety mechanism to take this concern away.

Once you have decided on the position and type of the blind, then you can go on to look at the various designs available. You may want to consider a fabric that has a blackout lining. This will mean that if the blind is for a very sunny room, it will assist in shutting out as much sunlight as possible. This is useful for those bright, early mornings when you want to stay in bed or need privacy.

Now you will need to consider the decor of the room and the type of fabric you want. Some vertical and Venetian blinds can be made of metal or wood, these may match the interior of the room better than fabric. If you are choosing fabric, consider whether you want to make a statement with bold patterns or just have something neutral which allows you to change the decor of the room, should you need to.

Make sure you do your research on home blinds on the Internet and also at home furnishing stores, so you get the right blind for your home. There are many designs to choose from off the shelf, or you may decide that you want something custom and get something made to order. Whichever you decide, make sure the fit is good and the design fits with your decor.

Do You Want To Create A Unique Home Design? Choose String Curtains!

When it comes to transforming or changing your home decor, curtains are extremely helpful. Being rather inexpensive, they allow us at the same time to make major modifications in a room. Only by picking a new color or a new design for your window treatments you can create a new charming atmosphere that will transform your house into a cozy home.

Nowadays the field of interior design offers us a wide variety of solutions. Different styles and color palettes, different concepts and statements – from the traditional to the minimalistic ones, from the exotic luxury to the modern simplicity.

When it comes to selecting new curtains, you can choose from many different types: heavy drapes and sheer curtains, soft textures and thick materials, traditional and modern colors, not to mention beaded and string curtains!

Until recently, string curtains were used mostly in public places – hotels, restaurants and bars – wherever the owners intended to create a unique, somehow exquisite atmosphere. During the last years, however, this type of curtains started to appear in private homes.

Do you know why? String curtains are extremely flexible. They are not only a stylish accessory, but also a practical light-blocking and space dividing solution.

The most obvious use for this type of curtains is installing them at your windows. Unlike thick heavy drapes which can fully darken your room, string curtains will gently block the blinding sun rays without stopping the daylight from entering your home. Such a ‘filtered’ light will create a special glowing aura inside the house.

You can also install string curtains in an empty doorway. It’s a good way of delimiting the kitchen from the dining room, for example – you separate the rooms without stopping the free air circulation.

String curtains are a handy solution when it comes to dividing a room. if you have a big kitchen and no dining room, install some string curtains with tie-backs – this way, with just two simple movements, you can delimit the cooking area from the eating area.

Do you have an empty wall and no money for an original Picasso? Instead of decorating it with cheap kitsch paintings, be original and show your sense of fashion: by combining two or three (or even more) colors of string curtains, you can create all by yourself an inspired and unique wall decoration. Your living room will never look the same again!

If you got tired of your bedroom’s traditional image, don’t be afraid to improvise and express your personality! Surround your bed with string curtains and allow yourself to enjoy the atmosphere of ‘A Thousand and One Nights’!

Do you have some unaesthetic shelves that you usually use as a storage facility? It’s time to improve the situation! Every corner of your home deserves to look nice! If you can’t afford a new fashionable closet, hide the shelves with string curtains and enjoy the effect!

Our modern lifestyle is changing as instants pass by. New technologies are not the only result of this continual development. New interior and exterior designs for our homes appear every day. By using string curtains you can create a modern, unique, charming and comfortable home decoration!

If you’re changing your interior design and you’re looking for some useful advice about using string curtains, check our this article about the color of string curtains and your personality.

Fitting Made To Measure Wooden Blinds

Made to measure wood blinds fit in most rooms and make a great window covering.

Putting them up on the other hand can be a nightmare if you haven’t hung blinds before. In actual fact, it isn’t so hard, but I know how I felt the first time I fitted a blind.

Before you start drilling, you should chek the blind for damage, and remove any obstacles from the window, including vases, photo frames etc.

Then make sure the fixing position is sound – you should really have done this when you measured so I’ll assume your wall / window frame is solid enough to take the weight of the blind.

Mark the fixing positions for your brackets – this way you can make sure they are level. Make sure you have the right drill bit for where you are fitting.

Wooden venetin blind brackets are mostly a box type affair. There is a door that snaps into place once the blind is in place. They are very strong and offer various fixing positions.

To cover the metal rail at the top of the wooden blind you should be supplied with a pelmet. The wooden valance will be held in place with either plastic clips or velcro.

The blind slots into the brackets and you are about done. All you need to do is attach the valance which should complete the look and hopefully cover any gaps at the side of the head rail as well as the metal headrail itself. Some wooden venetain blinds are supplied with velcro to fix the pelmet / valance and some use plastic clips which are much more secure – so that is our preferred choice.

Before you pack everything away, make sure the blind works okay. If it does, and all of the slats tilt then congratulations – you have finished.

If you are looking for cheap wood blinds then you could do much worse than to compare the prices and help available at Wood Blinds Express

Home Security Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire

Home security products are available from various suppliers in the Bedford & Milton Keynes areas ranging from DIY stockists to large security companies. Many suppliers specialize in one or two areas of security, whereas “Inside Out” tends to deal with quite a wide range of products and services providing their customers with collapsible security grilles, vandal protection screens and shed bars to name but a few.

Home security is becoming more of an essential rather than a “nice to have” in these uncertain times. That is exactly why you should ensure that the security you have installed, will do the job it is intended for. For example if you are going to have collapsible security grilles on your windows and doors, make sure they carry the “secure by design” or the “LCPB” logos. These logos let you know that the products are police preferred or insurance standard grilles. So if you want good quality security give “Inside Out” a call and they will make sure, your security is up to a standard, not down to a price.

Other security products that are becoming increasingly popular are designed to prevent opportunist thefts, the “Garage Guardian” is one such item, it is installed onto an up and over garage door and deters just about any attempt to break in. Garden sheds are increasingly being targeted by thieves who see it as an easy and often lucrative source of easy money, the “Shed bar” can be installed onto any shed door and again acts as a massive deterrent to the thief. Both these products plus many other innovative security items are available locally in the Beds and Bucks areas from “Inside Out”

When considering home security you have to take into account the type of person committing burglary these days. Gone are the days of the man in a striped pullover and a bag of swag over his shoulder, now you have burglary committed 24 hours a day. A typical burglar will always choose the easy option, i.e. pick up a garden ornament and smash the patio door glass, entering through the frame. To prevent this type of smash and grab it is a good idea to have decorative sliding grilles on the inside of the doors, burglars tend to walk away from this sort of deterrent and go for an easier target, like your neighbour. These decorative security grilles can also be locked, allowing the doors and windows to be left open during the summer with no worries about intruders.

Security is becoming more and more essential in this ever changing world, so don’t put your family or yourself at risk because you haven’t considered the vulnerability of your home. If you live in the Beds or Bucks areas give “Inside Out” a call and they will be happy to give you free advice and a free quotation in respect of any and all of your security needs.

Curtains vs. Blinds: The Better Choice

Window blinds have earned its status as a popular home decor. It has gained popularity over the years and is considered a modern window accessory. Then how come curtains still reign supreme? There are several reasons why majority of homeowners prefer this traditional window fabric.

Curtains rule for many because of the easy maintenance factor. Cleaning the curtains only needs a good soak and wash. For the more idle (or uninterested) homeowners, simply bringing their curtains to a drycleaners seal the deal. Not so with window blinds. You have to wipe or brush each slat and for the slow-movers, this can take forever!

Another reason is the more affordable price of curtains and the flexibility in which to own them. You can shop for it or make it on your own. The trend in home design is veering towards lighter drapes hence, maintaining and making curtains become much easier.

For the promising tailors, making their own curtains is also a way to save on expenses. Even the hopeless bunch in sewing (like me) can create a curtain with some patience and perseverance, which unfortunately I don’t have. But with only a straight stitch to make with a sewing machine, who can’t do this?

Blinds are at a disadvantage in terms of color because they’re mostly limited to neutral and pastel colors. Curtains, on the other hand, give you innumerable colors and designs to choose from. You can easily personalize your curtains by mixing up colors and fabric textures for a unique piece. Patterns and prints are also options, especially if you choose to make your own curtains. Your choices are only as narrow as the selection in the fabric store.

An important note – in using more than one color and design, ensure that they go well together. Don’t just throw in every color you see. The curtains must still blend well with the rest of the room.

There are reasons aplenty why you’d want to use curtains instead of blinds for your windows. Aside from being easy to create and customize even for a novice, curtains can give cohesion to the visual elements of any space. Whether it’s a personalized no-sew curtain or a store-bought ready-made one at the end of the day, you’ll still get all of a curtain’s advantages. Besides, your savings from buying curtains instead of blinds will reassure you that you made the right choice.

Using Curtains To Decorate

People have been using blinds for a very long time now. Homeowners everywhere are deciding to take off the blinds and style their windows with curtains. There are several different reasons for transferring from blinds to curtains; expense is less for curtains, more choices to make, can be made from hand, and easy to take care of.

Most people feel that blinds are just too much of a hassle to clean. While a curtain you can just take down and get dry cleaned or even throw into the washing machine. Blinds need to be hand cleaned and you need to clean each section or it will only continue to look dirty.

Another aspect about choosing curtains is that they are far less expensive than blinds. Custom blinds can be costly but curtains can be very cheap, especially if you buy them from a discount store and they are ready made. If you choose custom draperies, you will find that they could turn out to be more expensive than blinds. But most people today are getting away from heavy, custom drapes and seeking out lighter curtains.

If you make the curtains yourself, you can save even more money. Making curtains is not difficult to do. You can even make them out of bed sheets if you choose. Making curtains only involves using a straight stitch on the sewing machine. There are no-sew ways to make curtains as well, such as using an iron on basting technique. No sew curtains are easy to make; you just need to use the iron on basting tape to create the seam.

You have so many choices to decide on. You can decide what material to use, what color or colors to use, and whether you want lined or unlined curtains. You can sew your curtains together or you can choose a no sew pattern to create the look for your curtains. You can match your curtains with a focal point in your room. It may be your sofa or a rug down on your floor. Find a color that stands out the most and highlight that color in curtains.

There many other reasons why decorating with curtains is a far better alternative to decorating with blinds. Curtains are easy to make even if you are a novice with the sewing machine and they can pull together the decorating elements of any room. Whether you choose to use no sew curtains, make your own curtains or if you buy ready made curtains, you will find that you save money on these window coverings when compared to blinds.

Home Decorating experts all agree that it is essential to use area rugs. And as discussed here one of the most popular ranges is the solid color rugs.
