Blackout Curtain – That’s What I Want!

“I want a blackout curtain because I can’t sleep properly. I don’t want any gentle at all”.

Give me a penny for all the times I have heard that. I would be a millionaire by now (well I may be exaggerating a little) but you get the idea.

What I found is that most people don’t want their bedroom to be so dark that even during the day you can’t see your hand in front of your face.

What they actually want is a extremely darkish room, but still be able to get out of bed and make it to the bathroom without breaking their neck.

So how do you make your very dark room happen

No. 1 Put blackout linings into your curtains. (talk about stating the bloody obvious) If your good at sewing do it yourself. If not get a curtain maker to do it using your existing curtains or better still when making up your brand new curtains.

No. 2 Fit a valance or pelmet over the top of your curtains. Use a wooden top board to hang your curtains and top treatment from.

“Whats a top board” (will I ever get to the end of this article with all these interruptions!) Well it is a timber board usually 15 cm broad by 1.8 cm thick and as lengthy as your window is wide. It fixes to the wall over your window on simple “L” shaped shelf brackets. Usually set 15cm to 20 cm over your window. Your valance fits to the filter edge of the board with velcro tape and your curtain rails fix underneath the board. (now if were all ready can I carry on?)

This has 2 benefits.

First everything hangs better.

Second the board blocks the gentle coming out of the top of your curtains.

No. 3 Returning the outside edges of your blackout curtain back to the wall. What does that mean, well simply your curtains naturally hang on a curtain rail. The outside edges sit against the wall either side of your window. The only thing is that gentle can still leak through the small gap.

So to avoid this fit a pelmet board as above. Then before you hang your top treatment. Sort out the outside edges of your curtain. You need to screw a metal screw eye up into the underside of the top board. The metal screw eye must fix a couple of cm’s in from each end of the board and as close to the wall as possible.

Then hook the last curtain hook in the outside edges of your curtain into the metal screw eyes. This has the effect of taking the outside edges of your curtains right back to the walls blocking out almost all gentle from the sides of your curtains

No. 4 Your curtain rails are the next thing you can do something about. You need 2 curtain rails, both half the width of your window plus 15cm. So if your top board is 200cm lengthy then you need 2 rails at 115cm long.

Why 2 rails ? Well we are going to overlap them at the middle. You need to fix one rail towards the back of your top board and the other a few cm’s further forward. This allows your curtains when hung and closed to overlap and block out nearly all the gentle coming from the center of your curtains.

Shower Enclosures Versus Shower Curtains

If your shower is at one end of your bath you may have a shower curtain fitted to prevent the bathroom floor from getting wet. Shower curtains do have their drawbacks however. A shower enclosure or shower screen is a fine alternative to a curtain. They look much more stylish, are easy to clean, relatively easy to install, less expensive than you might think, and extremely versatile. Shower screens are made from toughened safety glass and come in a variety of patterns and shapes, such as rectangular or with rounded corners, and can fit into nearly any size and shape of bathroom.

Shower Curtains – Disadvantages

Shower curtains must be used in conjunction with a bath and can only be put in place with a curtain rail or rod which is attached to bathroom walls and occasionally the ceiling. Shower curtains are prone to mildew – a fungus which thrives in hot and humid conditions such as bathrooms – as they are not easy to clean. They must be taken down and machine or hand washed. A mildewed shower curtain not just looks and smells unpleasant, it can be a health risk too. They also have the tendency to billow inwards and stick to your body.

The Solution – Install a Shower Enclosure!

Unlike shower curtains, a shower enclosure can be fitted either in a bath scenario or on its own. Your bathroom will look so far much more attractive if you have a shower door or shimmering free-standing shower enclosure. It will be much lower in maintenance too. Unlike a shower curtain which has to be taken down to be cleaned, shower screens and enclosures can be cleaned in their original position with a fast spray of surface cleaner and an easy wipe down. Another advantage to shower enclosures and doors is that they allow more light to permeate the bathroom making it feel much more spacious. Shower curtains are less reflective and give the appearance of taking up more space.

Installation

Shower enclosures however, are attached to floor standing shower trays which are naturally made from a stone-resin mix or composite plastic. The tray must be utterly level so that the enclosure itself sits straight and can be correctly attached to the wall. If you don’t already have a waste outlet in position, contact a plumber who will advise and install one. Once adjusted, the tray should be sealed with silicon sealant. If you are fitting a shower enclosure directly onto a bare wall make sure that the sealant or waterproof adhesive doesn’t hamper tiling. Tiles or appropriate cladding must be in place to protect your walls and shower tray foundation from water damage. If walls are unequal shower enclosures can be adjusted to hug uneven walls preventing leaks. Some DIY experience is useful if you want to install your shower enclosure yourself, but if in doubt contact a plumber.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Keeping your shower enclosure gleaming fresh needn’t be the toil some people say it is. The following couple of simple steps are far quicker and easier than taking down a curtain and putting it into the washing machine or giving it a hand wash. After every shower wipe down the wall tiles and enclosure doors with a towel. To prevent mildew, spray down with anti-mould and mildew spray then leave the door available slightly available to allow air to circulate.

How To Hang Shower Curtains

If you have a shower over a bath tub then you need a shower curtain to prevent the whole bathroom getting wet when you take a shower. Buy a shower curtain in a design you like and which matches the style of your bathroom – often shower curtains are the biggest colored surface in this small room – so it’s important to get it right. Once you get your shower curtain home, here’s how to hang it properly

1. Lay out the Shower Curtain

Open up the package and lay the shower curtain out fully on the floor. Shower curtains often have two parts (which you might buy separately). You can have an outer non-waterproof layer and an inner waterproof liner or you may only have a single waterproof curtain.

2. Line Up the Eyelets

If you have an inner and outer curtain both will have eyelets in the top. If you have two parts then lay out the liner first. If there is a wrong side and a right side then have the right side facing the floor. Then lay the outer curtain on top with the eyelets at the same end and with the right side facing outwards. That way you will see the best side on the liner when you are in the shower and the best side of the curtain when you are in the bathroom!

Line up the eyelets between the two curtains so the holes match. If you have bought shower curtains and liner individually and the eyelets don’t match up you may be better hanging the curtains separately and using a double (dual track) shower rod or rail.

If you have a single waterproof curtain then only lay it out on the floor.

3. Insert the Rings

You will need as numerous shower curtain rings as there are eyelets in the curtains. Insert one of these into each eyelet.

4. Hang over the Bathtub

Place the curtain rings on the shower curtain rod or rail which should be installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. (You don’t want the whole thing coming down on you in mid-shower).

The inner lining or single shower curtain should be placed inside the bathtub as you shower to prevent water dripping onto the floor. The outer curtain (if you have one) should be arranged outside the bath tub.

5. After Your Shower

After you have showered available up the curtains completely – pull them as far as they extent across the length of the rod or rail so that they have a chance to dry – this will help prevent mildew.
