How To Hang Shower Curtains

If you have a shower over a bath tub then you need a shower curtain to prevent the whole bathroom getting damp when you take a shower. Buy a shower curtain in a design you like and which matches the style of your bathroom – often shower curtains are the biggest colored surface in this small room – so it’s important to get it right. Once you get your shower curtain home, here’s how to hang it properly

1. Lay out the Shower Curtain

Open up the package and lay the shower curtain out completely on the floor. Shower curtains often have two parts (which you may buy separately). You can have an outer non-waterproof layer and an inner waterproof liner or you may only have a single waterproof curtain.

2. Line Up the Eyelets

If you have an inner and outer curtain both will have eyelets in the top. If you have two parts then lay out the liner first. If there is a wrong side and a right side then have the right side facing the floor. Then lay the outer curtain on top with the eyelets at the same end and with the right side facing outwards. That way you will see the best side on the liner when you are in the shower and the best side of the curtain when you are in the bathroom!

Line up the eyelets between the two curtains so the holes match. If you have bought shower curtains and liner separately and the eyelets don’t match up you may be much better hanging the curtains separately and using a double (dual track) shower rod or rail.

If you have a single waterproof curtain then just lay it out on the floor.

3. Insert the Rings

You will need as numerous shower curtain rings as there are eyelets in the curtains. Insert one of these into each eyelet.

4. Hang over the Bathtub

Place the curtain rings on the shower curtain rod or rail which should be installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. (You don’t want the whole thing coming down on you in mid-shower).

The inner lining or single shower curtain should be placed inside the bathtub as you shower to prevent water dripping onto the floor. The outer curtain (if you have one) should be arranged outside the bath tub.

The most popular curtains have a pencil pleat heading usually with a 7.5 cm wide heading tape with three rows of woven pockets that allows for adjustment in height when hung. The heading tape has three draw cords running the length of the tape. The cords are pulled up to create the pencil pleat effect and should be knotted at both ends before gathering the tape. A more softly gathered look will be achieved if the cords are pulled less. Ideally, the cords should in no way be cut, as it is necessary to untie them and flatten out the gathers for cleaning.

Pinch pleated or French pleated curtains have a slightly much more sophisticated look with evening spaced triple pleats across the width of the heading. Because of the pleat and gap arrangement the curtains will fold back nicely and hang better than standard pencil pleat curtains, with gathers and neat pleats that are uniform. Also, because pinch pleated curtains fold back so nicely and “tighter” than pencil pleated curtains they are ideally suited to windows where the fabric needs to be as far as possible from the glass to allow much more natural light in. The even eyelet spacing gives equal folds of fabric in front and behind the pole.
