Measuring up to treat your windows with curtains should be the foremost step and perhaps the most important one. If you get your measurements incorrect, despite how well you have stitched your curtains, the preferred look will be not be achieved.

There may be two categories in which curtain measurements are divided. One is for when the rod already exists and the other when the rod does not exist. Before you start measuring for the new curtains, you should keep in view that the width is always measured and written down first and then the height is measured and penned down.

Another point to remember when measuring for curtains is that it is always better to use a metal tape measure that is retractable. Using a cloth tape or yardstick may not give an accurate measurement and there would be a higher probability of error in the measurement. The benefit with a retractable metal tape is that it stays tight on the rod.

This style has been getting popular for some time and it would be best to cover most of the trim if this option is selected on a rod pocket or a tab style curtain. The length of the curtain should always be about four to six inches longer. The tiebacks would also imply more of a limitation. Curtain fullness can also be regarded as another factor of resolving the matter.

Divide this measurement by the width of the cloth which you are going to use, usually fifty four inches. To measure the length of the curtain first measure from the bottom of the ring to the point where you want your curtains to end. To allow the top seam add eight inches to this measurement to the finished length of two inches and six inches for bottom seam for unlined and lined curtains with joint heading tape.

After you are done with the mounting style, you can easily concentrate of the width that would be required for the curtain. Another factor that needs to be considered, is taking the correct measurements. This would be the length of the curtains that depends immensely on the style that you would prefer for your curtains. Length can be easily determined by your personal preference.

If designed material is to be used then every length should be a full design repeat. Hem allowance for lining is typically six inches for the apex seam and four inches for the bottom lining.

For the height, you should place the tip of your metal tape at the point, which is the bottom of the ring clip. This is the point from where you want the curtain to hang.
