There are other parts of the country besides Florida where vertical blinds are used. Because of the many new developments in them, they are worth looking at even though they still are the least used of all shade types. They are the obvious pick for covering sliding glass doors, or patio doors. Imagine trying to get through a patio door that had a rolling shade over the opening. You’d need somebody to close it after you went through, or you’d leave it open.
Vertical blinds are individual slats of many kinds of materials that attach to an overhead track and are moved horizontally along the track. If you are handy, you can install them yourself. Most of them come with illustrated directions, even CD’s that demonstrate the way to do it. These are hung more like drapery than other shades. The track they move on, the metal hooks for attaching each slat, the equipment for the actual moving them back and forth all must be installed.
They can be found in many different materials. The most affordable is PVC vinyl, which can be hundreds of different colors. After that, there is an explosion of types of slats: faux wood covered, fabric covered, embossed, and way out there, mirrored. Some of these coverings would keep them from making the clattering sound they used to make.
If you choose faux wood, you can match the color of your existing wood flooring, and they are very water and liquid resistant. You still have to wipe them off because they don’t shed liquids by themselves. It makes a very dramatic effect to have your window coverings the same color as your floors.
To deaden noise, try the fabric covered slats. There’s no clattering and the fabric itself helps muffle noise. There are many types of fabric covered slats carried by dealers, but you could also get them custom covered to go with any room. You can mix horizontal shades with the fabric covered type, and as long as the patterns or colors match, they will look great.
Embossed types have a raised pattern on the slats. This adds visual interest to them, and a contrast when the light hits them. This type is usually made of the less expensive PVC plastics.
The farthest ‘out there’ design is metallic. They come in very shiny silver or gold, and this is the side that faces toward the room. The outside looks normal, white or ivory. These metallic are the most light obstructing.
There are also a couple more questions to answer about your shade. Because these can be installed to open from the right, the left, or from the middle. That would be two different panels, of course. The type of slats has a further refinement. You can find curved slats and S-curve slats. These were designed for much tighter light control than the flat ones. They seal together very nicely.
Vertical blinds a can be found everywhere there is a home store, which might even give a free class on installation. You will be happy with the prices at the big box stores, but your choices might be smaller. The materials to mount the spring-loaded cords, hiding them behind the blind without slack, will be supplied as well. This device prevents kids and cats from playing with the loose cords.
