There are any number of ways of dressing up a room from the color that you put on the walls to the furniture that you place around the floor. One of the effective methods of creating some kind of eye-catching interest in the room is with the curtain style that you use to frame your windows. Although the curtains are primarily used for darkening the room and for privacy, the decorative aspects cannot be ignored either.

Some curtain styles might be decided by the way in which the curtains are hung. Curtains such as tab-topped and eyelet curtains define the way in which the curtains are attached to the curtain rod. In both of these cases this hanging method influences the way in which the curtains hang which affects the look of the pleats and the lines that are created as a result. Both of these curtain styles look particularly effective as they create structured substance as a frame behind the room’s furniture.

Another way in which the styles of curtains might be defined will have to do with the way in which the curtains are pleated. Pleats are formed depending on the way in which the curtain fabric is gathered and they can enormously change the look of curtains even if the material and colors are exactly the same.

Some of the well-known types of pleats include box pleats, pencil pleats, fan pleats, goblet pleats and French pleats. All of these pleats depend on the way in which the material is drawn together at the top of the curtains. The curtain might be attached to the curtain rail at the extremely end of the fabric or the material may be drawn together using large, widely spaced gathers so that the folds are more pronounced.

Another type of curtain style that will affect the way in which they are opened and closed are casement curtains. These curtains are hung by means of a sleeve that is sewn into the top of the curtain material. These curtains are generally not really meant to be opened or closed on a ordinary basis, acting much more as decorative pieces than largely functional. They are a reduced cost option because they don’t require any accessories such as casement tape, hooks or curtain tracks for them to be functional.

No matter what curtain style you prefer, it is essential that you meet the functional needs of the house first. Make sure the curtains are large enough for the windows they are covering and that the drop is lengthy enough to reach the floor comfortably. Then, as lengthy as the pattern doesn’t clash badly with the room’s decor, the curtain style should simply complement the rest of the room.
